First Nighter: Richard Bean’s Workplace “Toast” is Nicely Buttered, Dostoevsky’s “Idiot” Transferred Giddily to the Stage

Call them gang comedy-dramas, if you like. The truth is, you might want to get in the habit, because they appear to be coming our way. Is it a trend? Will it pass? Probably. All trends eventually pass.

Nevertheless, a few months ago Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew opened at the Atlantic’s downtown space (and will reopen shortly at their Linda Gross auditorium). In it blue-collar workers gather at the rest-and-relaxation room and get caught up in their factory’s potentially shutting down. Now Richard Bean’s Toast is at 59E59 Theatres. In this one blue-collar workers gather in the canteen and get caught up in their factory’s potentially shutting down.

The only difference between them is: In the former, the factory turns out automobile parts; in the latter, the factory turns out bread. Okay, the other difference is that the former factory is located in Detroit, and the latter is located in an unnamed England industrial town, where the men speak in a heavy dialect that might daunt some stateside auditors but really shouldn’t.

It shouldn’t because, just as Skeleton Crew decorated the just-ended theater season, this one shapes up as a strong play for the season getting underway–and a championship bread loaf goes to the seven character men who make up the cast.

Blakey (Steve Nicolson) is the snap-to foreman, although not greatly loved Colin (Will Barton) would like to take over the position. Old-timer Cecil (Simon Greenall), who assumes this could be his last job, and whippersnapper Peter (Matt Sutton) play a continuing game of grab-the crotch. Taciturn, dim-witted Walter Nelson, known as Nellie (Matthew Kelly), will take on any task assigned him and husbands his cigarettes closely. Dezzie (Kieran Knowles) is an all-round jolly presence, whereas timid Lance (John Wark) arrives as a temp student but actually has another agenda going.

Bean, who’s beloved this side of the pond (as he is that side) for One Man, Two Guvnors, spends the first act introducing the co-workers and watching how they react with each other on their half-hour breaks or on their briefer cigarette breaks. He listens in to what they have to say to boss Beckett, who frequently phones. (My guess is that sly playwright Bean picked the name Beckett, because these men are living their own downhome version of Waiting for Godot.)

In the second act, suspense mounts when a bread tin has been sucked into the main mechanism and has caused a breakdown in operations. This maddening turn of events threatens the men’s ability to complete an important large order thrust on them at a late hour. They’ll need to stretch their shift to the early morning, as it is.

What will happen? Will agreeable Nellie venture into a hot-oven area to retrieve the tin and possibly scorch himself, or worse. Will someone else do the dirty duty? If no one can, will that spell the end of the factory and the end of their careers and incomes?

No spoilers will be included here. What can be said is that Toast, which takes place 40 years ago, chronicles the slow death of the industrial economy in England just as Skeleton Crew covers that disturbing evolution in the States. Bean, who’s an expert with a quip and a joke, has something more serious on his mind here than he did with the lovable One Man, Two Guvnors, and he has the right cast, the right director in Eleanor Rhode and the right set designer in James Turner, who must have had a bang-up time covering the set with the flour that layers the players, too.
*******************
Decades ago James M. Cain was asked during a New York Times Book Review interview how he regarded what Hollywood had done to his books. He responded by saying that Hollywood had done nothing to his books and pointed to a shelf on a nearby bookcase. “There they all are,” he said.

The wise retort came to mind when I was at the semi-immersive stage adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel, The Idiot, as plain Idiot. Did I say “stage adaptation”? Maybe a better phrase would be “stage tickling.”

Robert Lyons and Kristin Marting have employed actors Daniel Kublick, Lauren Cipoletti, Purva Bedi and Merlin Whitehawk to impersonate, respectively, Dostoevsky’s Prince Lev Myshkin, Aglaya Epanchin, Nastasya Filippovna and Parfyon Rogozhin.

They go about their assignments in a Nick Benacerraf “environment. It consists of crisscrossed narrow oriental rugs that divide a more or less square room at HERE. Also featured are four beaded curtains as doors and one stage, where the characters can talk into a microphone, if so inclined. Over the central area hangs a circular screen surrounded by four rectangular screens on which Ray Sun Ruey-Horng can air videos or the actors can use a handy camera to televise each other.

In redacting The Idiot Lyons and Marting have concentrated on the complicated, bordering-on-ludicrous love-hate relationships between and among the four focal figures. We all know that the Russian author delved deeply into the psychology of his personae, but we may not know, or accept, that what he observed then resonates strongly with the manner in which love plays out in contemporary society.

Dressed by Kate Fry in colorful outfits–Kublick wears silver loafers in which he bounces about lightly–the four love-haters sing, dance and carry on. At one point they do a lively routine Marting has choreographed to, apparently, Larry Heinemann’s music. They bring it off joyfully. At another point, Cipoletti of the striking profile (and not that long ago seen in Heathers, of all things) sings a Russian folk song in Russian. The Russian lyrics are shown on the screens.

Who can say what Dostoevsky would make of the brazen liberties taken with his famous work? (This is the third time Lyons and Marting have taken on Dostoevsky. This reviewer’s has only seen this one.) But somehow the enterprise is so unexpected and astonishing–and the players so committed to what’s asked of them as they sometimes weave through, and address, the dropped-jawed patrons–that it’s difficult to laugh off the proceedings outright. Sometimes something so gleefully bold in nature deserves a succumbing respect.

São Paulo Fashion Week Closes Out on an Eclectic High

São Paulo Fashion Week

The Met Gala may still be dominating our collective consciousness, but south of the equator, by the final day of São Paulo Fashion Week, a seasonal statement of sorts had become clear: During a crisis—in this case, Brazil’s political tumult—inventiveness arises. Case in point: the wide and varied array of ideas proposed by the city’s designers.

“Pop couture is the mixture of streetwear with haute couture,” offered Reinaldo Lourenço of his lineup’s ethos. His latest collection recalled the flash of the ’80s, with sexy cuts and plenty of glittering stripes. For designer Gloria Coelho, architecture and asymmetry were the foundation of her collection, with pieces sharply tailored, almost to the point of extremity; those styles found their counterpoint in the organic creations of Paula Raia, a tropical answer to the aesthetics of, say, Azzedine Alaïa. Raia shows only once a year, at her beautiful home, surrounded by friends and family. Her one-of-a-kind dresses take time to be made, and she seems unhurried in her creative process, empowered by the freedom to do things her way—something that would turn many a designer green with envy against the current, uncertain fashion calendar.

On the note of independence: Designer Alexandre Herchcovitch completely reinvented himself this season. He left his namesake brand, now owned by Inbrands group, and created a ready-to-wear offering for his husband’s (Fabio Souza) vintage furnishings store, À La Garçonne. “I have sourced for vintage fabrics in both São Paulo and New York, creating the new with the old,” said Herchcovitch. “It’s a new moment [for me], with a lot of freedom.” Forget the designer who emerged from the nightlife scene, and who added a hint of fetish to so many of his creations; now he’s a family man (active on Instagram, he has even created the hashtag #familiasouzaherchcovitch, where he and Souza post images of their adorable kids). “In the collection, we have a little bit of everything. It’s like our own closets.”

I Only Hear Wedding Bells If They Ring in Alaska

2016-05-03-1462286703-3096897-weddingcosts.jpg

The venues have been vetted online, through Google Images and Yelp reviews. The current finalists? A reasonably priced lodge in Homer, Alaska, and a state-funded park in South Dakota. Now I just have to search Airbnb and determine if there are some nice hosts in either location who would be willing to accommodate about 200 friends, relatives and possibly a DJ.

This is what a father of girls must do after casually reading — and, as a result, upchucking his morning coffee — a survey revealing that his hometown of Chicago is the second most expensive U.S. location for a wedding. In my case, two weddings.

The survey, conducted by wedding website The Knot, estimates getting married in the Windy City will set me back $ 61,265 once I have covered the reception, music, flowers, attorney’s fees when my wife and I divorce after arguing over which relatives not to invite, and powerful prescription drugs that, if taken with food or milk, should hopefully make me forget the entire event and the plundering of my savings account.

Perhaps I should take heart knowing we did not put down roots in New York City, the most expensive U.S. location for nuptials, with a price tag just north of $ 82,000, according to The Knot. This is hardly a shock considering New York leads the nation in every “most expensive” category, the lone exception being Most Expensive Chicken Nuggets if Served by Snow White. Thanks, Orlando.

New York dads, you may want to consider relocating immediately, as Long Island, the Hudson Valley and the outer boroughs of Manhattan also made the list. Rounding out the top 10 were North/Central N.J., Cape Cod, Mass., Palm Springs, Calif., New Orleans and anywhere in Rhode Island.

But The Knot sympathized with fathers everywhere by also including the 10 least expensive wedding locations. Alaska and South Dakota occupied the top two spots, hence my research and willingness to offer my children a choice. I’m partial to Homer, Alaska’s Driftwood Inn. Wait until I tell my girls that not only is there plenty of RV parking for guests, but wedding packages include a promise to move the reception into the nearby Elks Club in case storm clouds roll through Kachemak Bay — wherever that is. I’d be lucky to find complimentary umbrellas in Chicago. Girls, if your dad is paying, I strongly urge you to consider this location. Other than the possibility of a grizzly bear photobombing the wedding pictures, it seems very practical.

Of course, you could also choose my other option: the beautiful (and cheap) Black Hills of South Dakota. You’ll be happy to know that Custer State Park offers numerous sites for both your ceremonies and your receptions. And, being a state park, it also includes strictly enforced quiet hours, meaning I won’t have to cave when my guests — and the caterer — plead with me to keep the bar open past the agreed upon time.

I’ll save even more money should you decide to get married in South Dakota in January. Don’t worry, I checked out the winter wedding photos online; judging from the expressions on the bride and groom’s faces, nothing says love like standing in a snowdrift.

If these two states don’t offer everything you desire, The Knot also suggests I, excuse me, we, can save money by holding your weddings in Texas (OK, West Texas), Arkansas, New Mexico, North Dakota, Idaho, Montana or Oregon. If you insist on staying close to home, Central Illinois rounds out the top 10. Just say the word and I’ll start scoping potential locations in Heyworth or Blue Mound, both of which appear to be centrally located, according to the Illinois map I just downloaded.

Girls, please don’t call me cheap. Call me practical. And if any last minute expenses come up, your dad will happily pay for them with a minimal amount of grumbling.

I’ll just withdraw some money from my secret “Finally Have Dinner in New York” account.

What Every Mother Really Wants

Hello, America. Are you thinking about Mother’s Day? Feeling a tad guilty because the woman that merely gave you life has not yet merited a trip to the card store yet? Oh I know, you’re SO BUSY. Take it from this mom of three, keep your cards/flowers/chocolates. Momma wants a pharmaceutical, and I’m not suggesting showing up to Sunday brunch with a “J” in tow. (Noted exception; if you’re living in CO).

As for the rest of you, don’t be obtuse, I’m talking about taking a step into the time machine. Sigh. Work with me, please.

Before she was Your Mom, she was a smoking hot babe. And then YOU came along. With all the glories of weight gain, stretch marks and breastfeeding. The colic. The teething. The picky eater. And all before you could walk. So thanks for that hazing ritual, it sure kept things real. Real shitty.

Now that you’re sailing through adulthood, how do you intend to right your wrongs? Listen closely, let me whisper the magical salve that she craves; Botox.

Make an appointment for her with the dermatologist. Posthaste.

Accompany Mom to the doctor’s office full of bravado, engage in small talk with a medical assistant that undoubtedly attended a sub-par technician school (she’s nice enough), and have her succumb to needles. Willingly elect to have many needles full of Botulism injected into your MOTHER’S FACE. She will emerge looking rested, well — once the swelling subsides. This will undoubtedly make up for the teenage years. Maybe even the macabre tattoos on your forearm. Who knows? You could very well end up the favorite after all.

The kicker — you’ll pay for this privilege. A lot. My advice, don’t look for “a deal” when shopping around for injectables. Yes I know, I hate to pay retail too. Wholesale is actually a derivative word from Hebrew, meaning “don’t be a schmuck.” Sidenote: I am so grateful my parents sacrificed so much to send me to a Jewish day school. My math skills are remedial and my geography is strictly limited to former French colonies. I cannot locate Ohio. Alors.

I digress.

Despite my children trying to push me over the literal edge daily (we no longer hike), I refuse to succumb. REFUSE. And there is no reason why you should look like a hag either, the world needs more pretty. I could swear that’s a Beyonce song. It’s practically unpatriotic not to subscribe. What would Mom want? An Ameri-can or an Ameri-can’t? Thought so. Consumerism is very USA.

So a shout-out of appreciation from this Momma to Botox and big pharma for getting this anti-perspiration drug approved off-script by the FDA to prevent wrinkles. Sure, we’ve got Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease and Cancer. But, priorities people! Contrary to what you’ve read, these enterprises need to be celebrated for their foresight and vision. Your mother will thank me. Well, not “me” per se, but derivatively, there will be gratitude felt.

The 3 Changes You Need to Make for Great Spring Skin

For Allure, by Lauren Hubbard.

If you’re a dedicated Allure reader, it won’t come as a shock that you need to switch up your skin-care products with the seasons: lighter, more sheer for summer; pile on the moisture in winter. But what about the in-between seasons, like now-upon-us spring, when the temperature and humidity start to rise but you’re still pulling on a jacket instead of sweating literally everywhere? Here are the changes to make to stave off the great weather-changing skin freakout.

Lighten up. The low humidity levels and bracing winds of winter call for a heavy-duty moisturizer, even for oilier skin types. But as warmer weather rolls in with those famous April showers, December-appropriate lotions start to feel pore-smothering. Try switching to a lighter gel-cream formula, like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel or Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer. The magic combo of lightweight hyaluronic acid and occlusive glycerin pulls in water from the air and locks it into skin so you stay hydrated without feeling like you’re wearing a blanket on your face.

Scrub down. The sudden influx of moisture out in the world can also mean a sudden excess of moisture on your skin, which can in turn lead to totally unspringy dullness and clogged pores. While you have to be careful with overexfoliating delicate winter skin, spring is the perfect time to step up your regimen slightly. Since you’re not in full-on summer mode yet, try an exfoliator that uses salicylic acid, like Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid, instead of a harsh scrub. “Salicylic acid is excellent at removing pore-clogging oil, and it doesn’t traumatize the skin like a physical exfoliant,” says Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist in New York City.

Do some spring cleaning. As with your moisturizer, you need to tone it down when it comes to your daily cleanser. If you’ve been favoring a skin-coddling cleansing balm or cream cleanser for the harsh winter months, swapping it out for a foaming gel will help clear away any excess oil from the naturally shine-prone T-zone. We like Eau Thermale Avene Cleanance Gel Cleanser, which cleans thoroughly without stripping skin and also has oil-controlling monolaurin to help your skin stay balanced.

Turns Out, It Costs More To Be A Groomsman Than A Bridesmaid

When all is said and done, it turns out groomsmen shell out more on wedding duties than bridesmaids – at least according to a survey of 1,005 people by finance and banking website GOBankingRates

Let these handy infographics guide you through bridesmaid’s and groomsmen’s spending habits:

1. Clothing

2. Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties

3. Wedding Gifts

4. Incidental Wedding Costs

Bridesmaids are more likely to go over budget; 32 percent of bridesmaids said the total amount they spent was more than they budgeted or expected to pay, while only 28 percent of groomsmen said the same.

Here’s a handy chart to keep overspending at bay:

Panic Sets In Across Canada as Citizens Fear Ted Cruz Return

TORONTO: Goodyear Satire Company–

Riots broke out across Canada as citizens reacted to rumors that Senator Ted Cruz (R Texas) might return to his home country after suspending his campaign for the U.S. Republican Presidential nomination.

“It was like when they broadcast ‘The War of The Worlds’” explained Ernie Butler of Edmonton, “The prospect of Cruz wrapping his tentacles around the weakest among us is too much to bear,” said Butler as he scampered into the darkness clutching a sleeping bag and sack of hastily-made sandwiches.

Townspeople with pitchforks stormed the former Cruz residence in Calgary, quickly setting it aflame amid fears it might be the Cruz’ ultimate destination. Firefighters refused to cross the ring of children blocking their path as the home was reduced to cinders. “It was what God wanted,” claimed Pastor Chad Hollingsworth as he picked through the charred pantry, sometimes pushing people out of his way.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was unexpectedly thrust into his first crisis. His hastily convened cabinet voted to build a border wall, hoping it could impede Cruz’s progress, “But that will take months,” said a nervous Trudeau, “and we understand Cruz and his family are already on the move. Plus, I’m not sure we can get the Americans to pay for it.”

“The air force has fitted tactical nukes onto our most advanced jets,” said the Prime minster, “But we don’t know whether the missiles can penetrate Cruz’s exoskeleton, which satellite photos show is growing hour by hour.”

This Hoodie Is Specially Made For Avid Huggers

These sweatshirts are making it easier to hug it out.

The clothing brand Chukcha launched a Kickstarter last month to support its special hoodies that have a pocket in both the front and back called Together Wear. So basically, your boo thang or BFF can slip their hands into your hoodie back pocket for a perfect cozy hug.

Seriously, you and boo can just hang out in that embrace.

The cold won’t even bother you, anyway.

Professional freeskier Artem Glebov says he came up with the idea for the hoodie after falling in love, he says in a video about the product.

“Being in love, I realized how important it can be just hugging with my sweet,” Glebov said in a video. He later explained that that product “gives you the ability to share the world with your sweetheart and feel like two parts of a whole one.”

Seems like the idea has appealed to huggers across the Internet. The Kickstarter raised its $ 30,000 goal in three days. The fundraiser is still ongoing and the brand hopes to expand the number of models and colors. They also plan to add an +XXXL size.

The brand plans to start manufacturing the Together Wear hoodies in June and begin shipment a month later.

‘Til then, it looks like we’ll have to hug the old fashioned way.

ReThink Review: A Bigger Splash – When An Icon Plays An Icon

With the unexpected deaths of David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and Prince before 2016 is even half over, it’s hard not to feel like artists whose talents, personas, and even appearances could best be described as “otherworldly” are disappearing from the world. It’s as if benign aliens living among us are suddenly being called back to their home planets. Perhaps the actress who most fits this description (though I certainly hope she stays earthbound for decades to come) is Tilda Swinton, who has been challenging, mesmerizing, and enthralling audiences throughout her career with her striking looks, boundless talent, and her ability to reinvent herself for every role she plays.

In light of these qualities, there’s perhaps no better woman than Swinton for the lead role in A Bigger Splash, which was adapted from the 1969 French film La Piscine. Swinton plays an iconic rock star in the mold of David Bowie who has retreated to a small Italian island with her boyfriend to recover from throat surgery, only to have their peace and seclusion shattered by two unexpected guests. Watch the trailer for A Bigger Splash below.

Swinton plays Marianne Lane, a rock legend described as “the woman of the century” who has been sidelined by throat surgery that prevents her from speaking above a whisper. Her younger boyfriend, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts), is a documentarian who is nursing Marianne back to health as she recuperates in a villa on the volcanic Italian island of Pantelleria, located between the coasts of Tunisia and Sicily. But their wordless days spent sunbathing, reading, swimming, and snuggling in comparative equality and domesticity come to a jarring end with the arrival of Harry (Ralph Fiennes), Marianne’s gregarious but obnoxious former producer and lover who introduced her to Paul. Accompanying Harry is Penelope (Dakota Johnson), Harry’s recently-discovered daughter from an earlier fling.

With Harry’s clear affection and history with Marianne — along with his inability to shut up, filter his thoughts, or regulate his volume — things quickly become tense with Harry imposing himself on every aspect of Marianne and Paul’s once-relaxing holiday in an attempt to charm or force his way back into Marianne’s life. Meanwhile, Penelope’s penchant for quiet observation belies a wide troublemaking streak as she attempts to get under Paul’s skin, seemingly out of sport or boredom. A Bigger Splash also features flashbacks to Marianne’s full-throated rock star days as she and Harry collaborate, fall in love, and split apart, as well as Harry’s fateful decision to introduce his then-friend Paul to Marianne after Harry’s wild ways have ruined their relationship. The stakes eventually ratchet up, but it would spoil the film to tell you how.

A Bigger Splash truly belongs to Swinton. Not since Holly Hunter in the Piano has an actress conveyed so much while saying so little. And when Marianne does decide to rasp a few words, you know it’s because her feelings are so strong that she’s willing to risk her voice and career to make them understood.

But it’s the way Swinton’s otherworldly presence meshes so perfectly with the character of Marianne that makes Swinton’s performance so utterly magnetic — and something I hope Academy Awards voters remember during Oscars season. Both Swinton and Marianne are iconoclasts in their bones (and bone structure), seemingly more than human while capable of exuding femininity, androgyny, strength, delicacy, glamor, and casualness all in the same moment. With her striking features and statuesque six-foot height, either Swinton or Marianne would stand out in a crowd even if they weren’t famous. Add the fact that Swinton is considered a fashion icon in her own right and that all of Marianne’s outfits in A Bigger Splash are either custom-made, ready-to-wear, or haute-couture Dior and you have women who would turn heads on the sidewalks of Manhattan or the cobblestones of an island village.

Harry is a terrific foil for Marianne, and it’s definitely fun to see Fiennes playing a character so unbridled, profane, and contemporary. While it’s hard to know if Paul’s comparative lack of charisma has more to do with Schoenaerts, the fact that Paul represents so much of what Harry isn’t, or that Schoenaerts shares so much screen time with two Oscar winners, he does a good job of being quietly grumpy about Harry’s presence and antics. Of the four main characters, Johnson comes across as the weakest, especially since it’s still unclear to me if her talents extend much beyond being fresh-faced and willing to take her clothes off.

But none of that should keep you from seeing A Bigger Splash, which is the kind of intelligent, nuanced, unpredictable drama for adults that often seems to be in short supply in movie theaters these days. And it’s further proof that Swinton is one of the most impressive talents working today across all mediums, even when playing a character who could be described the same way.

Laugh Lines

Laugh Lines

Ben Bova, best-selling and award-winning author of the “Grand Tour” and “Asteroid Wars” series, takes a sardonic look at the humorous possibilities of future technology. The Starcrossed: Bill Oxnard, a young technological genius, had perfected true three-dimensional television, making ordinary TV obsolete. He thought he would be rich and famous — but he hadn’t realized how deranged the executives running the industry were; nor what sort of programs they were planning to broadcast using the new process in the maniacal quest for ratings. Cyberbooks: Carl Lewis has a dream — to make books accessible and affordable to every person in the country, and thinks his “cyberbook,” about as large and as cheap as a pocket calculator, will make it possible for anyone to download books directly and cheaply. But he has no idea what he’s about to get into, nor does the lovely but nave Loai Tashkajian. Will they survive this foray into the cut-throat world of big publishing? And just who is suddenly murdering all those nice elderly people on the streets of New York, anyway? These two full-length novels of twistedly comic, but very possible futures, plus several shorter works, add up to a generous volume of futuristic fun and hilarious high-tech.

Poetry Book Fights Isolation in Immigration Detention

2016-04-25-1461602776-5516316-HuffPo.jpg

Isolation is the key component of oppression. Throughout history, the voices of those who have been colonized, exploited, and marginalized are rarely heard because those who are in power develop systems of isolation. These systems have taken many forms, such as Nazi concentration camps, Japanese internment camps, South African apartheid, and Jim Crow segregation laws. But we must not make the mistake and assume that this is merely history. Structures of isolation, oppression, and racism are as alive today as they were 100 years ago.

In fact, twenty years ago this week, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, ushering in an era of mass detention and deportation of immigrants. Over the last two decades, the immigration detention population has increased fourfold to approximately 34,000 people per day, making the United States the largest immigration detention regime in the world. The current U.S. immigration detention system is designed to isolate us from one another, but poetry and art can remind us of our shared humanity.

Today, Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC) is releasing Call Me Libertad: Poems Between Borders, the first book to combine the voices of people in immigration detention with their family members and allies to design a new narrative and give unprecedented insight into one of our country’s modern systems of isolation, immigration detention. The book features writers, such as Alexandra–a journalist, poet, and musician–who was detained 444 days at the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona. These are Alexandra’s words beyond walls:

“I started to write in immigration detention because I did not have many things to do, and I needed to express my feelings. Being interminably watched, one is not able to demonstrate one’s grief or anxiety, but these emotions demand expression. So, at first, I wrote only in Russian, but later, I took shaky and unsteady steps as a child does in English. When I felt scared, I wrote “Ambiance.” When I felt sarcastic, I composed “Silly Rhymes,” perhaps not valuable as fine literature, but my rhymes gave me a few moments to breathe in the fresh air of opportunity and greet a new day with hope. The second poem below, “One Frank Poem” is exactly one of those poems, designed to conjure a reader’s smile. The first poem below, “Hotel ‘Mil Estrellas,’” is more wistful and melancholic; it depicts the moments of utter loneliness that sometimes invaded my soul while in U.S. immigration detention. I have a lot of stories to tell, and I hope you will listen. But maybe I should tell these stories, if only for the sake of their heroes–my fellow immigrants in detention, still waiting for their freedom to come.

Hotel ‘Mil Estrellas’

Where I am going there will be nobody to take care of me.
Where I am going I will live in the Hotel of Thousand Stars.
They all will be mine. Their flight, unstoppable,
Will be as a notice of heavenly court -
They will mark the time of my sentence.

Where I am going I will be alone.
I will dwell on proverbial streets and under proverbial bridges.
And I’ll count myself happy enough
to remember the meaning of home.

I will feed my old poems to warm my old hands,
And my face will be wrinkled and full of contempt,
And I will curse the passers-by in all known tongues -
For they are more lucky than me -
In the Hotel of Thousand Stars.

Where I am going you’ll wait for me in silence.
With your arms wide open and your smile welcoming,
With your heart pumping your tricky blood.
But I can, even now, see the rusty bars
Of the cage you already prepared for me -
In the Hotel of Thousand Stars.

All those premonitions are gnawing at me,
Forging soul into stone, unbreakable.
I fight hard to awake that late warrior,
Who had started this way in the past.

I feel chill expanding under my ribs,
Where God has His secret shrine.
I am tossing away promises and beliefs.
I try hard to define what’s mine.

If I manage to reduce myself to emptiness…
If I freeze this growling unease…
Then I maybe’ll be able
to collect enough strength
And to make my step back to life.

It looks like I’ve been just put in storage.
Before, I had the courage to go into light;
Before, I’d raise my hand, wave at you,
And surrender to your embrace…

So now I take a deep breath -
And I finally go ahead
To the place unknown, to the words unsaid,
To the Thousand Stars.

One Frank Poem

What should I say being in here?
What, can I cry out of this place?
Should I behave as I am sincere
Or act like heroes of classic plays?

Would it be helpful
To be pathetic?
Would it be useful
To be myself?
I can shed real tears -
Or I can fake it;
I can make promises -
And be saved.

I thought a lot
What I will publish:
Which things to share,
Which poses to take…
Should I pretend to be a pile of rubbish?
Should I encourage like a piece of cake?

Should I describe to you all daily routine
To make you feel like you were inside?
Tell about people, their stories looting,
And push so hard, reader might have cried?

Could I persuade you, I’m kind and generous,
Caring and talented, full of faith?
I thought a lot and I found no answers.
So do your job -
and decide yourself.”

Alexandra is the eighth writer in CIVIC’s series of blog posts called “Words Beyond Walls.” Check back in for more posts in this series in the coming months, and get your copy of CIVIC’s new book of poetry and art, Call Me Libertad: Poems Between Borders today! Alexandra was released from the Eloy Detention Center on April 21, 2016, after 444 days in detention with the support of Mariposas Sin Fronteras, Casa Mariposa, and Casa Libre en la Solana in Tucson, Arizona, who raised funds for her $ 5,000 bond. Over 50 people, many of whom are writers themselves, contributed to her campaign, including poet Franciszka Voeltz who wrote custom-made “Poems-to-Go” for contributors. Alexandra is now free, and just two days out of detention, she made her inaugural performance of her poetry at the Casa Libre Fair Weather Reading Series.

Meet the New Cool-Girl Uniform, Just in Time for Spring

sneakers

There is something to be said for the ultimate vintage (or vintage-inspired) dress score. The way a delicate, micro-floral-print silk floats across the room or a bold geo pattern instantly grabs your attention is a fashion feeling pretty hard to beat. We can wax just as poetic about our love for sneakers, which have basically become de rigueur in the office, in the streets, and about anywhere that your legs will carry you. When you put these two together? Well, that’s just a match made in sartorial heaven.

While high heels may indeed be making a comeback, breaking our sneaker addiction has proven nearly impossible. (Trust us, we’ve tried.) But for those who couldn’t possibly fathom sporting sneakers with a dress, look no further than the ultimate cool girl, Veronika Heilbrunner, whose ability to transform a flowing frock from gushing romanticism to street style–worthy has become her signature. Combating the over-the-top sweetness of a picnic-check shift sitting primly on your figure requires little more than a pair of luxe, high-tech kicks. Sure, that ladylike chiffon may be swishing with every step you take, but a flash of metallic gold on your feet or a peek of the iconic Nike swoosh is just what you need for a dose of alternative edge.

Above, seven vintage-inspired dresses paired with their companion kicks for the ultimate cool girl uniform this spring.

If You Look Closely At These Rings, You’ll See The Couples That Wear Them

Within the world of wedding photography, professionals are constantly innovating — think dronesGIFs and smoke bombs. Self-taught Australian photographer Peter Adams-Shawn is doing just that with wedding band reflection photos he calls “ringscapes.”

“Ringscapes” consist of a wedding scene captured in the reflection of the bride or groom’s wedding band.

“It wasn’t really a case of deciding to do them,” Adams-Shawn told The Huffington Post. “It was a case of seeing a shot and taking it. Then seeing something similar again and shooting that, too.”

Adams-Shawn, of Memories Of Tomorrow Photography, first began capturing reflections of wedding moments in 2011, when he noticed a bride reflecting in a flower girl’s eye. He calls those “eyescapes.”

“The first ‘eyescape’ came as a result of taking a shot of a flower girl having her makeup done,” Adams-Shawn said. “I saw a reflection of the bride in her eye and took the shot.”

The idea for ring reflections came just as organically. In 2012, Adams-Shawn had grabbed a bride and groom’s rings to get a photo, when he noticed a reflection.

“I placed the rings on the railing in a gazebo whilst the bride and groom were cuddling to stay warm behind me,” Adams-Shawn said. “When I set the rings down, I saw the reflection. I quickly grabbed a flash and took the shot. After that I was always on the lookout for opportunities with rings.”

Getting a simple reflection shot isn’t particularly complicated, Adams-Shawn said.

“Getting a reflection is relatively easy. Getting a meaningful one that tells a story is for me, at least, where the real magic lies,” he said.

But how does he do it?

“I see a reflection, I photograph it,” Adams-Shawn said. “I don’t fully understand the intricacies or technicalities of what is going on, but quite frankly I don’t really care. Wedding photography is about the pictures — the memories.”

Kelly Ripa Says Wedding Dress Was The ‘Best $199 I Ever Spent’

Kelly Ripa returned to her post on “Live With Kelly and Michael” Tuesday morning equipped with a well-executed statement about the drama surrounding the show over the past few weeks, a loving message for soon-to-be ex co-host Michael Strahan and most importantly, vacation photos.

The host and former soap opera star shared a photo from a vacation she took with husband Mark Conseuelos and some friends (that she assured everyone was planned before Strahan announced he was leaving the show last week).

The couple went away to celebrate their 20th anniversary in the Caribbean, and Ripa wore a pretty fitting outfit for the occasion.

“See that dress? That’s my wedding dress. And guess what? It still fits,” she gushed to the audience.

She continued: “I bought it at the Barneys Warehouse Sale, and the dress is actually 25 years old. My marriage is 20 years old. I didn’t buy it as a wedding dress. I just bought it because it was really pretty and I wanted to buy something from the Barney’s Warehouse Sale. I was working on the soap, I wasn’t making a lot of money, it was $ 199 on final clearance sale and I was like, ‘Do I eat this week or do I get this dress’ Literally that was the thought process. And I said to myself, ‘I bet if I buy this, maybe it will be an investment piece. Maybe I’ll wear it more than once.’”

Consuelos and Ripa met in 1995 on the set of “All My Children” and eloped in Las Vegas just one year later. The lovely dress was a far departure from the elaborate gown her character Hayley wore to marry Consuelos’ character Mateo on the show they co-starred in at the time.

Apparently her real-life wedding dress, which she says she now wears as a beach cover-up “constantly,” paid off.

“It was the best $ 199 I ever spent in my life,” she said.
